whats the best method for making great tasting coffee, is it the French press?

I use a French Press and I like my coffee strong. (I really do love Starbucks but I can never make it taste like that at home.) I am always in pursuit of the perfect cup. (I drink it with cream or half and half.) I have heard that most of the coffee we get isn’t really fresh and that really fresh-roasted beans make a difference. I’d like to hear from people with experience. What do you recommend?

ok I have a french press that is also a tumbler type thing, my question is: does coffee deteriorate when brewed longer than 4 minutes?

Other Coffee and Espresso Articles

I’ve heard that a french press can steep and brew both, but are there any other devices that can do the same? What about a basic drip coffeemaker like Mr. coffee?

During th 4 minutes or so the grounds sit in the French Press, should I push the plunger down a little so all the grounds are underwater, or should I not do so and let them float gently at the top?

I find all coffee disgusting, so for me, the taste test is not an accurate measure of which way is best.

I just bought a french press. I would like to know which are some good organic coffee brands that I could brew myself. Something I can also buy online. I usually shop for coffee at trader joe’s or wholefoods. I am currently brewing weaver’s coffee.

The french press has a nylon screen, I’m looking for no plastic or aluminum.

This question might be scientifically inclined so do bear with me.

Details: I brew coffee in a French press. Immediately after I pour boiling water into the French press (which has a scoop of ground coffee, of course) I notice that the pressure within the French press builds up instantaneously.

Sub-questions: What causes the pressure to be so great that I cannot even push down the press, unless I use all my strength? Often I’d have to pull the press handle up a little then resume pressing it down (to allow steam/ air to escape) – then the pressure lessens considerably.

OK, you’re probably saying, ‘of course, this is a scientific fact. It happens all the time.’ But the pressure doesn’t always build up so immensely. Maybe certain variables play a part (water pressure / steam; brand of coffee (course or fine grind; purity of coffee etc?).
