Making coffee in the backcountry with a handkerchief
Posted by adminJul 30
This is how I make my coffee when I’m out in the woods. It’s easy, tastes great and doesn’t take any special contraption to do it. Just be sure to thoroughly rinse the handkerchief before your trip since you want to make sure it is completely free of any soap. You also want to ensure it’s not leaking any dye. Sorry for the shaky video, maybe I’ll redo this in the future but for now it should do the trick.

Hey Troy,
With no flattery intended I really love your videos. I was really glad to see a new one come out, so keep it coming!
p.s my girlfriend and I are doing Western Uplands this summer. Should be fun – if not crowded. We’ll follow it up with some bushwhacking in the Laurentians.

Thanks, I really appreciate that. I should be rolling out a few more in the next month or so, just have to get around the pulling the footage together.
Hope you have a great time on your trips this summer. Can’t wait to get started myself.

If you still are looking for another brew method try Turkish or Arbic Coffees they are very finely ground more than Espresso and you just need to put 1 or 2 spoons in a cup pour boiling water, mix and let sit 3-5 minutes . All the grounds sink to the bottom with the finer grounds.
This is how the arabs do it and also in many Eastern European countries as well. Be sure to check and see if the coffee contains cardamom ( a spice) you may not like it and some of the brands premix it in

Hey troy, Not like you havnt thought of this before I know it’s not of the best quality but have you ever tried instant?

I’ve tried all sorts of methods for getting my morning coffee. And they often included contraptions that could break and took up space, or it came out too weak or I didn’t like the taste. Instant coffee is one of the ones I tried but the taste just didn’t agree with me, I wish I like the taste of it, it would make things a lot easier. So far, this method has produced the best results for my taste buds.

I’ll check that out, thanks. I tried cowboy coffee but the grounds float around more than I like. Maybe Turkish/Arabic would do the trick.

nice vids, i just dont get why you bother with the gas cooker instead of a more traditional open fire method, it might be a little harder but i know id rather carry just the pans etc. and use the fire over having to carry a heavy, clunky gas cooker around too that could run out of gas

@bonzaibb12 I had the same thought. I actually enjoy the kind with cardamom in it. Taking that kind of coffee on a hike today with the kids. Decaf chai for them. I will also be making bannock in the same fashion as @maddythegoose showed in a different video. Should be a real picnic.
